CHARAKA-THE
GREAT PHYSICIAN
All
beings of universe, if applied after duly processing and in
proper way bear therapeutic
value.
Charaka is one of
the best known, and the most popular name in Ayurvedic medicine. The
life and time of Charaka are not known with any
certainty. Some Indian scholars have stated that
Charaka existed before Panini, the grammarian, who is
said to have lived before the sixth century B.C. This is based on
the fact that Panini mentioned the name of Charaka in
some of the sutras, which he wrote. Another theory identifies
Charaka with Patanjali, who is said to have expounded
the science of Yoga. By examining all available sources it seems
that Charaka may have lived between the second century
B.C. and second century A.D.
CONTRIBUTIONS
The Charaka
samhita, the work of Charaka is a massive
treatise on ancient Indian medicine. It describes not only the
existing knowledge about medicine in all aspects but also the logic
and philosophy behind the medical system.
In the description
of the Ayurvedic medicine of his time, Charaka deals
elaborately with subjects such as foetal generation and development,
anatomy of the human body, function and malfunction of the body
depending upon the equilibrium or otherwise of the three humors of
the body viz., vata, pitta, and kapha.
Etiology, classification, pathology, diagnosis, prognosis, treatment
of various diseases and the science of rejuvenation of the body
mentioned in detail.
Charaka laid great stress on the proper
examination of the patient and his environments with a view to
arriving at the diagnosis of the diseases, before the treatment was
prescribed. According to him a physician who failed to enter the
body of the patient with the lamp of knowledge and understanding can
never treat diseases. He should pay heed to including causes ,
prodromal symptoms, constitution of the patient, the diseases which
he is generally liable to suffer, age of the patient , his vitality
, the season in which he got the diseases and all
other relevant factors while prescribing medicine, diet and routine
for the patient to follow.
Charaka’s Material medica consist chiefly of
vegetable products though animal and mineral products are also used.
All these drugs were classified into groups on
the basis of their action on the body. The drugs were given in
various forms such as powder, paste, infusion, decoction, pill,
confection, roast, fermented, distilled, medicated and alcoholic
drinks , medicated oils or ghee and inhalants as
well as enema/douche into the rectum , urethra and female genital
organs. The aim of the treatment is to maintain or bring
back normal balance between various
dhatus and doshas (tissues and
humors).
The vast
treatise of Charaka also gives an idea of the various
categories of the practitioners of healing art, specialization in
different medical subjects, status of the physicians and their fees,
nursing care, entry to medical learning , Indian school of
philosophy such as Nyaya and Vaisesika
which formed the fundamental basis of
medical theories , medical botany and classification of animal
kingdom particularly in regards to properties of their flesh etc. It
also describes various customs, traditions, lends, routine of daily
life , habits of smoking and drinking, dress and clothing of the
people of that
era. |
