Botanical Name: Trigonella foenum-graceum
Fenugreek is having a widespread usage among the Indian spices both in managing ailments as well as in cooking. Methi is an inevitable part of Indian cooking and is one of the important components of Ayurvedic medicines like Chandraprabha vati, Madhumeh har yog, Medhohar herbal tea, capsule and tablets.
Fenugreek pacifys the vata and kapha.
Indications
Fenugreek is best known for its hypoglycemic action which makes it useful in diabetes.
It has anti-inflammatory action and also reduces the cholesterol level.
It is also an anti-oxidant, anti-cancerogenous, anti-adhesive and hepatoprotective.
The daily intake of fenugreek detoxifies the body and helps in indigestion, constipation and acidity.
The presence of diogenin the natural estrogen like component helps in uterine contraction during child birth and also helps in dysmehorria.
Fenugreek taken in the post natal period will improve the excretion and menstruation and also help in inducing milk in lactating women and is also strengthening.
It is also used for kidney ailments, vitamin deficiency diseases, mouth ulcers, boils, bronchitis, and infection of the tissues beneath the surface of the skin (cellulitis), tuberculosis, chronic coughs.
Daily dose 2-6 gms
Contraindications
Excess intake is contraindicated in case of pregnancy as it causes uterine contractions.
